About LPG Carriers

LPG carriers transport liquefied petroleum gas, mostly propane and butane. The gas is carried as a liquid under pressure or by refrigeration, depending on the ship type. Cargo work involves loading, discharging, gassing up, cooling down, inerting and purging, with strict gas checks, work permits and PPE. Compared with dry cargo ships, LPG carriers need stronger tanker safety control and close link between deck and engine departments. Ranks that commonly appear on LPG carrier crew lists include Masters, Chief Officers, Second Officers, Third Officers, Chief Engineers, Second Engineers, Pumpmen, ABs and Motormen. Officers need the advanced liquefied gas tanker certificate if they have immediate responsibility for cargo operations. Basic training is required for ratings with cargo duties. Medical fitness and a valid medical certificate are mandatory before joining.

Cargo and operations

LPG carriers carry liquefied petroleum gas, mainly propane and butane. The cargo is kept as a liquid by pressure, by refrigeration, or by both. Loading and discharging use cargo pumps, compressors and reliquefaction plants. Gassing up, cooling down, inerting and purging prepare cargo tanks between cargoes. Main risks are flammable gas, very low cargo temperatures and pressure changes. Work near cargo lines, pumps and valves requires gas measurement, work permits and full PPE. Deck and engine teams work side by side during all cargo operations.

Crew on board

Deck officers plan and supervise cargo operations, watchkeeping and tank atmosphere control. The Pumpman looks after cargo pumps, valves and lines. ABs help with cargo connection, mooring and deck watch. Engineers operate and maintain compressors, reliquefaction plants and gas detection systems. Motormen and Oilers support engine watch. Electricians and ETOs maintain electrical and control systems. All crew with cargo duties must hold the relevant gas tanker certificate. Work is more enclosed and controlled than on dry cargo ships, so good communication between deck and engine is essential.

Special training

Special training on LPG carriers is governed by STCW V/1-2. Officers and ratings with specific duties related to cargo or cargo equipment must hold a certificate in basic training for liquefied gas tanker cargo operations. Masters, Chief Engineers, Chief Officers, Second Engineers and anyone with immediate responsibility for cargo operations must hold a certificate in advanced training for liquefied gas tanker cargo operations. General training still applies: STCW VI/1 basic safety training, STCW VI/2 survival craft, STCW VI/3 advanced fire fighting, STCW VI/4 medical first aid, and STCW VI/6 security-related training.

Sea service

For liquefied gas tanker basic training: at least three months of approved seagoing service on liquefied gas tankers, or an approved basic gas tanker training course. For advanced training: at least three months of approved seagoing service on liquefied gas tankers, or at least one month of supervised onboard training including at least three loading and three unloading operations, plus an approved advanced course.

Medical fitness

Seafarers must hold a valid medical certificate before joining. The certificate states that hearing and sight, and colour vision where relevant, are satisfactory. A medical certificate is valid for a maximum of two years, or one year if the seafarer is under 18. A colour vision certificate is valid for a maximum of six years.

Jobs on LPG Carriers: questions and answers

What cargo does an LPG carrier carry?

LPG carriers transport liquefied petroleum gas, mostly propane and butane. The cargo is kept liquid by pressure, by refrigeration, or by both. Some LPG carriers work as fully refrigerated or semi refrigerated ships. The type of ship decides cargo tank pressure and temperature during transport.

What certificates do I need to work on an LPG carrier?

If you have specific duties related to cargo or cargo equipment, you need the basic certificate for liquefied gas tanker cargo operations under STCW V/1-2. If you are Master, Chief Officer, Chief Engineer, Second Engineer or have immediate responsibility for cargo operations, you need the advanced certificate. General STCW basic safety training is also required.

Do I need special sea service for a gas tanker certificate?

For the basic certificate, you need at least three months of approved seagoing service on liquefied gas tankers, or an approved basic gas tanker training course. For the advanced certificate, you need at least three months of approved seagoing service on liquefied gas tankers, or at least one month of supervised onboard training including at least three loading and three unloading operations, plus an approved advanced course.

What medical certificate is needed for LPG carrier jobs?

You must hold a valid medical certificate before joining. The certificate states that hearing and sight, and colour vision where relevant, are satisfactory. It is valid for a maximum of two years, or one year if you are under 18. A colour vision certificate is valid for a maximum of six years.

What is the difference between a fully refrigerated and a semi refrigerated LPG carrier?

A fully refrigerated LPG carrier keeps cargo liquid at low temperature and near atmospheric pressure. A semi refrigerated LPG carrier uses both refrigeration and pressure. Fully refrigerated ships usually carry large cargo parcels. Semi refrigerated ships can load from pressurised storage and may carry smaller parcels.
