Upload your CVAbout Passenger Ships
Passenger ships carry people, not only cargo. This group includes cruise ships, ferries, Ro-Pax ships, high speed craft and floating hotels. Work on board is built around passenger safety, musters and drills, crowded spaces and short port turns. Crew must keep gangways, muster stations, life-saving appliances and public areas ready. On ferries and Ro-Pax ships, loading and discharge of passengers and vehicles is part of the daily operation. On cruise ships, hotel service, cleaning and catering run alongside deck and engine watches. Common ranks on this vessel type are Master, Chief Officer, Second Officer, Third Officer, Chief Engineer, Second Engineer, ETO, Bosun, AB, OS, Chief Cook, Cook and Messman. Training under STCW V/2 is specific to this vessel type.
Cargo and operations
Passenger ships carry people. Cruise ships also carry stores, baggage and provisions. Ferries and Ro-Pax ships carry passengers, cars, trucks and ro-ro cargo. Work includes passenger loading, vehicle loading and discharge, baggage handling, provision stores, and keeping muster stations and gangways clear. On Ro-Pax ships, closing and opening hull openings is part of the operation. Main risks are crowding at muster stations and gangways, vehicle movement on vehicle decks, slips, unsecured stores, and hull openings left open.
Crew on board
The Master runs the ship and passenger safety duties. Chief Officer, Second Officer and Third Officer share bridge watches, musters and safety rounds. Bosun and AB keep decks, gangways, mooring gear and life-saving appliances ready; OS does deck work and cleaning. Chief Engineer, Second Engineer, Third Engineer and ETO keep propulsion, power and hotel systems running. Electrician, Motorman or Oiler and Wiper work in the engine room. Chief Cook, Cook and Messman run catering and mess service. Radio Officer handles radio duties where carried. Cadets learn under officers.
Special training
STCW V/2 applies to masters, officers, ratings and other personnel on passenger ships on international voyages. Crew need passenger ship emergency familiarization for their duties. Those serving passengers in passenger spaces need passenger ship safety training. Crew on the muster list to help passengers need crowd management training. Masters, chief engineers, chief mates, second engineer officers and persons responsible for passenger safety in emergencies need crisis management and human behaviour training. On ro-ro passenger ships, senior officers and persons responsible for embarking passengers, cargo or closing hull openings need passenger safety, cargo safety and hull integrity training. Crowd management, crisis management and ro-ro training must be refreshed, or competence shown, at intervals not exceeding five years. All seafarers also need BST under STCW VI/1.

Jobs on Passenger Ships: questions and answers
What passenger ship training do I need?
STCW V/2 applies to masters, officers, ratings and other personnel on passenger ships on international voyages. You need passenger ship emergency familiarization for your duties. If you serve passengers in passenger spaces, you need passenger ship safety training. If you are on the muster list to help passengers, you need crowd management training. Senior officers and persons responsible for passenger safety in emergencies need crisis management and human behaviour training.
Do I need Ro-Ro training for ferry work?
On ro-ro passenger ships, STCW V/2 requires senior officers and persons responsible for embarking passengers, cargo or closing hull openings to complete training in passenger safety, cargo safety and hull integrity. This training must be refreshed, or competence shown, at intervals not exceeding five years. Other crew still need the passenger ship training that fits their duties.
How long is my medical certificate valid?
Under MLC 2006 Reg. 1.2, a medical certificate is valid for a maximum of two years, or one year if you are under 18. A colour vision certificate is valid for a maximum of six years. If it expires during a voyage, it stays in force until the next port of call where a new one can be obtained, for no more than three months.
What does a deck officer do on a passenger ship?
Deck officers keep navigational watches, use ECDIS and ARPA, and take part in musters and safety rounds. On ferries and Ro-Pax ships they also watch passenger and vehicle loading. They work with the Master, Chief Officer, Bosun and AB. STCW V/2 adds passenger safety, crowd management and crisis management duties for those assigned.
