How to become a seafarer in Romania after school
Official rules for school students and school leavers. Check every requirement with the maritime authority before you apply or pay.
Officer: maritime academy or college
- Constanța Maritime University (a state university) offers a bachelor's programme in navigation and maritime and river transport.
- It also offers naval electromechanics (marine engineering), including an English-taught programme.
- Bachelor admission is by competition of application files and requires the baccalaureate diploma.
- The baccalaureate diploma is uploaded with the online application.
- An officer of the watch certificate (STCW II/1) requires a medical and psychological certificate, the study diploma and the seaman's book.
Rating: rating course
- Helmsman and senior helmsman certificates (STCW II/4, II/5) require a medical and psychological certificate, a study diploma and the seaman's book.
- Motorman certificates (STCW III/4, III/5) have the same set of documents and IMO courses.
- Basic training (Program de pregătire de bază maritimă) is one of the required IMO courses.
- Maritime English is required for rating certificates.
Exams and certification
- The ANR organises the competence assessment for certificates of competency at its headquarters.
- Registration for the exam is done online.
- Exam registration needs the seaman's book, the degree diploma, a medical-psychological certificate and the simulator assessment course.
- Candidates must show the competences required by the rules for the certificate requested.
Documents in order
- Seaman's book (carnet de marinar), applied for at the ANR.
- Study diploma and proof of the training practice: the practice journal with stamps from the ships.
- Certificate of passing the evaluation of the training practice.
- Then the competence exam and the application for the certificate with the medical certificate, photo and IMO course certificates.
Cadet training at sea
- Sea service (stagiu de îmbarcare) is service on board relevant to the certificate.
- Cadets keep a practice journal with the ships' stamps.
- The training practice is evaluated before the competence exam.
- A simulator competence assessment course is also required.
